Check out the new Gyrowheel!

The Gyrowheel is great for parents of 4-6 year olds that are too tall for a balance bike but are not yet riding a pedal bike.  It provides stability so the bike won’t fall over giving a child the opportunity to learn how to ride a bike correctly.  Gyrowheel senses unbalanced biking and re-centers the bike under the rider’s weight when the bike starts to wobble. Training wheels can’t do that!

Inside the Gyrowheel is a disk that spins independently of Gyrowheel. When the disk is turned on it creates a force — the fancy term is “gyroscopic precession” — that stabilizes the bike.

The Gyrowheel replaces the front wheel on most standard 12 and 16 inch bikes.  Rechargeable batteries keep the Gyrowheel powered up and when turned off, it acts like a regular front wheel.  As the rider’s skill improves, you can adjust the stability settings.

To see a demo of the Gyrowheel, check out this video:

We’ll have the Gyrowheel with us at the next Sunday Parkways so stop by to see it in action!  To purchase one today, visit Tikes Bikes!  Our first customer to use the Gyrowheel said, “My son has been on a balance bike since he was two but struggled with the transition to a regular pedal bike because he never learned to pedal. The GyroWheel was the perfect solution! It allowed him to focus on pedaling and braking instead of balancing. This would make a GREAT family gift to be passed from grandchild to grandchild, sibling to sibling. Or a super neighborhood investment to be shared at the summer BBQ’s! A MUST HAVE!

Videos of Tikes on Balance Bikes!

Believe it or not, this could be your kiddo!  It’s amazing how fearless our kids can be.  Balance bikes not only teach balance but instill confidence and trust in their own abilities.  It’s a great foundation for lifelong self-esteem and athletic ability.

This is Braven Santos, he started riding a Strider PREbike at 14 months. In this film, he is 2 years and 3 months old.

Infant Helmets

We’ve had many parents asking us for infant helmets this summer and with an infant of our own in the family, we know how hard it is to find one for those little guys!

The good news/bad news is this:

GOOD NEWS!  The smallest helmet we have found for infants and toddlers is for heads starting at 18 inches in circumference.  Tikes Bikes sells Little Nutty Helmets that adjust for head sizes from 18 inches to 20.5 inches  or 46 – 52 centimeters.   This allows you to use the helmet for several years as your child grows.  Additionally, Oregonians will be happy to know that Little Nutty Helmets are made by Nutcase Helmets, a Portland company.

BAD NEWS… Many infant heads are smaller than 18 inches!  Our little peanut’s head is a mere 41 centimeters making it impossible for him to wear a helmet safely.  In fact, the reason manufacturers may not make helmets that small might be because injury prevention specialists and doctors do not recommend that children under 1 ride in a trailer, child seat or sidecar.

We know people all over the world take their infants and toddlers on two-wheeled transportation so we’ll keep looking for peanut sized helmets but until then, if you have a child that fits into a Little Nutty Helmet – we highly recommend them!

For another view on infants and bikes, check out BikePortland.org.
